With all this said, streamers are not the cause of this, but they do have a part to play in the changes we see to the torrent eco-system.

The torrent network was never built to be an archive of everything, it is always just a strong buffer of the new content. Keep in mind though, the torrent network itself is still very young, torrents would have died out anyway in time as people would loose interest in them and new generations would come that do not have any interest in the old content. So streamers greatly increase the number of people that are using torrents, but decrease the seeding time, ending in an absurd number of seeds for new torrents and a very small seed count for the older ones.

Although older torrents are clearly loosing seeds faster (only on public trackers though), streamers have simplified the act of torrenting so much that it has become a reality for them to be used by even the people that do not know how to use a computer that well and would find the usual torrent clients to complicated to understand. I would not count it as the apocalypse of torrents though. (although this kind of behavior might create network flooding and kill your internet connection sometimes without any warning)

As Powder is instance based this is even a greater problem as it could not compete to daemon/service like software (such as uTorrent) that encourage leaving it open all the time in the background to seed. I have expressed my worries multiple times in private chats with many of the "most famous" torrent streaming software developers.

The behavior of peerflix/torrent-stream is to download the torrent and seed back to it's already connected peers until no one needs anything from you anymore, although, it will stop gathering new peers once it has downloaded 100% of the torrent.įrom my tests it can seed back anything from 1/2 of what it downloaded to 3 times as much or even more.
